How iOS 15 Health App Trend Notifications Work

In iOS 15, Apple introduced the Trends feature in the Health app to help users monitor long-term shifts in their personal health and fitness data. Rather than focusing solely on day-to-day fluctuations, the app analyzes extended periods of activity—such as steps, exercise minutes, and resting heart rate—to detect significant upward or downward patterns. When a sustained change is identified, the Health app sends a trend notification directly to the user's iPhone, offering timely insight into whether their daily habits are improving or declining.

The Health app uses an intelligent algorithm that evaluates your recent performance against your personal historical baseline.

  • Baseline Comparison: The algorithm analyzes up to 180 days of baseline data and compares it against your most recent 90 days of activity. This extended window ensures that occasional off-days or short bursts of high activity do not trigger false alerts.
  • Tracked Metrics: Trends cover 14 key health categories. These include daily steps, distance walked, active calories, exercise minutes, stand hours, cardio fitness (VO2 max), resting heart rate, walking speed, and sleep duration.
  • Pattern Recognition: A trend is flagged only when your average metric shifts in a statistically meaningful direction. If your daily average over the recent period consistently rises or falls compared to your historical baseline, the system logs it as an active trend.

How Trend Notifications Are Delivered

When a pattern shifts, iOS 15 proactively alerts you through standard system notifications:

  1. Directional Feedback: Notifications clearly state the metric and the direction of the change—for example, indicating that your daily steps are trending downward or your exercise time is trending upward.
  2. Contextual Detail: Tapping the notification opens the Health app directly to the specific trend card. Here, the app provides a visual chart showing the comparison between your recent average and your baseline, accompanied by an explanatory summary of the change.
  3. Actionable Insights: For metrics related to mobility or cardiovascular health (such as walking asymmetry or resting heart rate), the notification serves as an early indicator of potential physical fatigue or wellness changes, allowing you to adjust your routine before a minor shift becomes a long-term issue.

Managing Trend Notifications

Trend alerts are enabled by default in iOS 15, but users can customize their notification preferences at any time:

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Summary tab, then tap your Profile icon in the top right corner.
  3. Select Notifications.
  4. Toggle Trends on or off according to your preference.

From the Summary view, you can also scroll down to the dedicated Trends section at any time to review all active upward and downward patterns, even without receiving an alert.
