How iOS 15 App Privacy Report Tracks Sensor Access

The App Privacy Report in iOS 15 provides a centralized, seven-day audit trail of how installed applications interact with sensitive hardware sensors and personal data. Designed to enhance transparency, this feature logs every instance an app accesses your camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, or media library, breaking down the information into clear, quantifiable summaries that highlight both foreground and background activity.

The "Data & Sensor Access" Section

At the top of the App Privacy Report is the Data & Sensor Access section, which serves as the primary dashboard for tracking hardware and data usage. Instead of requiring users to monitor apps in real time, iOS 15 aggregates these interactions over a rolling seven-day period.

This section categorizes access events across six core areas:

  • Location: Logs when an app requests fine or approximate geographic coordinates.
  • Camera: Details instances where the photo or video capture hardware was engaged.
  • Microphone: Records when an app engaged audio recording capabilities.
  • Photos: Tracks read and write interactions with the Photos library.
  • Contacts: Displays when an app reads stored address book entries.
  • Media Library: Logs access to Apple Music and personal media files.

Chronological and Granular Tracking

The report organizes sensor data in two complementary ways to make the metrics actionable:

  1. View by App: Tapping a specific application lists every sensor that app accessed during the past week, along with precise timestamps for each event. It explicitly differentiates whether the access occurred while you were actively using the app (foreground) or while the app was running in the background.
  2. View by Sensor: Tapping a specific sensor category (such as "Microphone") provides a list of all installed applications that have requested access to that hardware, ordered by which app accessed it most recently, followed by total frequency counts.

Accessing the Report

The App Privacy Report is turned off by default. To view the summary:

  1. Open Settings on iOS 15.
  2. Tap Privacy.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and select App Privacy Report.
  4. Tap Turn on App Privacy Report.

Once enabled, iOS immediately begins logging sensor interactions locally on the device, ensuring the diagnostic history remains private and accessible only to the device owner.
