How iOS 15 App Privacy Report Shows Domain Tracking

Apple’s iOS 15 introduced the App Privacy Report to provide transparency regarding how installed applications access device permissions and interact with external network addresses. Within this tool, domain tracking contact reports allow users to monitor the exact domains each application contacts, offering clear visibility into analytics, advertising networks, and data transmission over a rolling seven-day period.

To view these metrics for an individual application, navigate to Settings > Privacy > App Privacy Report and scroll down to the App Network Activity section. Selecting a specific application from this list opens a dedicated breakdown detailing every network contact initiated by that app.

Individual App Domain Presentation

The report categorizes and displays network contacts using the following structure:

  • Chronological Domain List: The application's detail page presents a complete list of every unique domain contacted by the app during the past seven days. Domains are typically ordered by how recently they were contacted or by the total volume of network interactions.
  • First-Party vs. Third-Party Activity: The interface lists both the domains directly owned by the app developer (first-party domains necessary for core services) and external endpoints. Third-party domains often indicate embedded software development kits (SDKs) used for analytics, crash reporting, targeted advertising, or cross-site tracking.
  • Detailed Timestamps: Tapping on any individual domain within the app's list reveals the precise dates and times each connection occurred. This granular timeline helps users identify whether an app communicates with specific tracking servers continuously in the background or exclusively while in active use.
  • Website Network Activity: If the application includes an in-app browser or displays web content, the report separates direct app activity from Website Network Activity, showing which domains were contacted via web views visited inside the app.

Cross-App Domain Context

In addition to per-app reporting, the App Privacy Report includes a Most Contacted Domains section at the bottom of the main menu. Tapping a domain in this section displays a reverse report: a list showing every installed application on the device that contacted that particular domain, alongside the timestamp of each interaction. This allows users to easily spot dominant third-party ad-tracking networks collecting data across multiple distinct applications.
