How Focus Mode Syncs Across Mac and iOS 15

Apple introduced Focus mode in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey to help users reduce distractions by customizing notification behaviors. This article explains the technical and practical mechanisms of how Focus mode synchronizes states, schedules, and custom settings across your Mac and iOS devices using your Apple ID and iCloud.

The Underlying Sync Mechanism

Focus mode synchronizes across hardware using iCloud. When you activate or modify a Focus on an iOS 15 device, the change is transmitted through Apple's push notification network and CloudKit backend to all other devices signed in to the same Apple ID. As long as your Mac is connected to the internet and running macOS Monterey or later, the state change applies almost instantaneously.

Enabling "Share Across Devices"

For synchronization to occur, the feature must be enabled on each device:

  1. On iOS 15: Go to Settings > Focus and toggle on Share Across Devices.
  2. On Mac (macOS Monterey): Go to System Preferences > Notifications & Focus > Focus, and check the box for Share across devices located at the bottom of the window.

If this setting is disabled on any single device, that device will operate independently, neither sending its Focus status to the cloud nor receiving status updates from other devices.

What Synchronizes

When cross-device syncing is active, the following data points and behaviors are mirrored:

  • Active State: Turning on a Focus (such as "Work," "Sleep," or "Do Not Disturb") on your iPhone immediately turns on the corresponding Focus profile on your Mac. Turning it off reverses the action on both.
  • Custom Profiles: Any custom Focus profile created on iOS 15—including its name, icon, and color—will automatically appear in the Focus list on your Mac.
  • Focus Status: If you allow apps to display that you have notifications silenced (Focus Status), this permission syncs so messaging contacts see your status regardless of which device you are actively using.

What Does Not Sync

While the active state and profile definitions transfer across platforms, specific app notification permissions may differ. Because macOS and iOS run different applications, an app allowed on iOS (such as a mobile-only utility) does not automatically configure an equivalent Mac application unless both share the same bundle identifier or multi-platform framework. You may need to review allowed apps separately within macOS System Preferences to ensure your Mac workflow is properly filtered.

Requirements for Syncing

To ensure seamless operation between iOS 15 and Mac devices, the following conditions must be met:

  • Both devices must be signed in to the exact same Apple ID.
  • Two-Factor Authentication must be active on the Apple ID.
  • The Mac must run macOS Monterey 12.0 or later to be compatible with iOS 15's Focus protocols.
  • Both devices must have an active internet connection to send and receive iCloud status changes.
