How Find My Tracks Offline Accessories on iOS 15

Apple's iOS 15 significantly expanded the Find My network, allowing users to locate misplaced accessories such as AirTags, AirPods, and certified third-party gear even when they lack an active cellular or Wi-Fi connection. This offline tracking relies on a decentralized, crowdsourced mesh network formed by hundreds of millions of active Apple devices worldwide. By leveraging secure Bluetooth signals, opportunistic relaying, and end-to-end encryption, the network can pinpoint an item's location without compromising user privacy or draining device batteries.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Broadcasting

When an accessory compatible with the Find My network is separated from its owner and has no internet access, it constantly transmits a secure Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon. This beacon carries a rolling public key that changes periodically to prevent malicious parties from tracking the device across locations. Because BLE consumes minimal power, accessories can broadcast this signal for months or even years on standard coin-cell or internal batteries.

The Crowdsourced Relay Mechanism

Any nearby iOS 15 device (such as an iPhone, iPad, or Mac) within Bluetooth range acts as a silent relay station:

  1. Signal Detection: The passing Apple device passively detects the encrypted Bluetooth beacon emitted by the offline accessory.
  2. Location Tagging: The detecting device reads its own current GPS coordinates.
  3. Encrypted Upload: The detecting device bundles the accessory's beacon identifier with its own location data, encrypts this bundle, and automatically uploads it to Apple's Find My servers over its own cellular or Wi-Fi connection.

This entire process occurs entirely in the background. The owner of the helper device receives no notification, experiences negligible battery impact, and has no visibility into what item was detected or where it was reported.

End-to-End Encryption and Privacy

Security is a foundational element of the offline tracking system:

  • Asymmetric Cryptography: The accessory generates a public-private key pair. Only the owner's personal Apple devices hold the private key needed to decrypt the location data.
  • Apple's Zero-Knowledge Architecture: When the helper device uploads the location to Apple, Apple receives only encrypted data. Apple cannot identify the owner, the helper device, or the physical location of the accessory.
  • Owner Decryption: When the owner opens the Find My app on their iOS 15 device, their device downloads the encrypted reports from Apple's servers and uses its private key to decrypt the coordinates, displaying the accessory's location on the map.

iOS 15 Specific Enhancements

With iOS 15, Apple extended this offline architecture beyond AirTags to complex devices like the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. These headphones utilize the Find My network even when they are inside their charging cases or powered off. Furthermore, iOS 15 enables select iPhone models to remain discoverable via this same low-power Bluetooth beacon mechanism for up to 24 hours after being switched off or even after a factory reset, turning the entire ecosystem into a persistent, self-healing tracking network.
