How Find My Separation Alerts Work on iOS 15
Apple's iOS 15 introduced separation alerts—officially known as "Notify When Left Behind"—to prevent users from losing their devices and personal items. By combining continuous Bluetooth monitoring, geofencing, and Apple's Find My network, the Find My app automatically notifies your iPhone or Apple Watch the moment you walk away from a paired Apple device, AirTag, or supported third-party accessory outside of an approved trusted location.
The Underlying Technology
Separation alerts rely on a combination of hardware and software protocols running in the background:
- Bluetooth Proximity Sensing: Your primary device (such as your iPhone) maintains low-energy Bluetooth handshakes with paired accessories, AirTags, and other Apple hardware. When you move out of range, the connection terminates, signaling a potential separation.
- Geofencing and Location Services: The system tracks your iPhone’s coordinates relative to the last recorded location of your other devices. If the distance between your iPhone and the separated item exceeds a specific dynamic threshold, the system flags the event.
- The Apple Find My Network: For devices that do not have their own cellular or GPS hardware—such as an AirTag, AirPods, or an offline iPad—the crowdsourced Find My network assists in pinpointing the item's last known location using nearby Apple devices.
Trusted Locations
To prevent false alarms in secure environments, iOS 15 uses trusted locations (geofences). By default, the system suggests your "Home" address based on your Apple ID contact card. You can also manually configure specific locations—such as your office or a gym—where alerts should be suppressed. When an item disconnects within the boundaries of a trusted location, no notification is dispatched.
How the Alert Is Delivered
Once a disconnection occurs outside a trusted location, the operating system triggers a high-priority local push notification:
- Immediate Notification: A notification banner appears on your iPhone lock screen (or your Apple Watch if worn) stating that the item has been left behind.
- Contextual Mapping: Tapping the notification launches the Find My app directly, displaying a map with directions back to the item's last known location.
- Sound Playback: If you are still within hearing distance, you can use the Find My interface to prompt the left-behind device or AirTag to emit an audible chime to assist in immediate recovery.
Supported Devices and Activation
The feature works across modern Apple products running iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or watchOS 8 and later. Supported items include:
- iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers with Apple silicon or the T2 Security Chip
- Apple Watch models
- AirTags and third-party accessories integrated into the Find My network
- AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and 3rd-generation AirPods
To activate the feature, open the Find My app, select the specific device or item from the Devices or Items tab, choose Notify When Left Behind, and toggle the switch to the On position. From this menu, users can also define custom trusted locations to customize alert behavior.
