How Apple ID Account Recovery Contact Works in iOS 15
The Apple ID Account Recovery Contact feature in iOS 15 provides a secure, streamlined way to regain access to your Apple account and personal data if you forget your password or get locked out of your device. This guide explains how the feature functions, the technical requirements needed to use it, how to designate a trusted contact, and the exact steps required to generate a recovery code.
What Is an Account Recovery Contact?
An Account Recovery Contact is a trusted person—typically a close friend or family member—who can verify your identity and help you regain access to your Apple ID. Crucially, designating someone as a recovery contact does not grant them access to your account, personal data, photos, or messages. Instead, their device is solely authorized to generate a temporary six-digit security code that you use to reset your credentials.
Prerequisites
To utilize the feature, specific requirements must be met:
- Your device must be running iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS Monterey (or later).
- The designated contact must also have an Apple device running iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS Monterey (or later).
- Two-factor authentication must be enabled on your Apple ID.
- You and your recovery contact must be at least 13 years of age.
Setting Up a Recovery Contact
You can configure a recovery contact directly through your device settings:
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top to access your Apple ID.
- Select Password & Security.
- Tap Account Recovery, then select Add Recovery Contact.
- Authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.
- If you are part of a Family Sharing group, eligible members will appear automatically. Otherwise, search your contacts list to select an individual.
- Send the automatically generated invitation message. Once the recipient accepts your request, they are officially active as your recovery contact.
You can add up to five recovery contacts to ensure redundancy.
How the Recovery Process Operates
When you are locked out of your Apple ID and cannot complete standard account verification, the recovery workflow operates as follows:
- Initiate Recovery: Begin the account recovery process on your device or via the official Apple recovery interface.
- Contact Your Designated Person: Reach out to your recovery contact via phone, messaging, or in person to notify them that you need a recovery code.
- Generate the Code: The contact accesses Settings > [Their Name] > Password & Security > Account Recovery on their own Apple device. They tap your name and select Get Recovery Code.
- Share and Verify: The contact receives a six-digit code and communicates it to you.
- Reset Access: You enter the six-digit code on your device, which verifies your identity and allows you to set a new Apple ID password immediately without undergoing Apple's traditional multi-day recovery waiting period.
