Hotel Room Digital Keys on iOS 15 Explained

Apple introduced digital hotel room keys in iOS 15 through the Apple Wallet app, allowing travelers to store room keys directly on their iPhone or Apple Watch. This feature streamlines the hospitality experience by eliminating traditional check-in lines and physical plastic keycards. By leveraging Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, guests can securely unlock guest rooms, elevators, and other restricted areas on the property using only their Apple devices.

How the Setup and Check-in Process Works

To use a digital room key, guests must first book a reservation through a participating hotel's app or website. Prior to arrival, the guest completes the check-in process within the hotel brand's application. Once the reservation is confirmed and the room is assigned, an "Add to Apple Wallet" option becomes available.

Tapping this button securely provisions the digital credential to the Apple Wallet app on the user's iPhone and any paired Apple Watch. The key displays key reservation details, such as the check-in time and hotel address, but the key credential remains inactive until the room is ready and the official check-in time arrives.

Unlocking Doors with Express Mode

Digital hotel keys in iOS 15 support Apple’s Express Mode feature, which is enabled by default. Express Mode allows guests to unlock their door without waking or unlocking their iPhone, and without authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode.

To open a door, the user simply holds the top of their iPhone or the display of their Apple Watch near the door's contactless reader. The reader detects the credential via NFC, validates the encryption, and unlocks the door instantly. Express Mode also includes a Power Reserve feature on supported iPhone models, allowing the digital key to function for up to five hours after the device’s battery has depleted.

Accessing Hotel Amenities and Multi-Point Entry

The digital key is not limited to guest room doors. Participating hotels can configure the credential to grant access to multiple shared facilities across the property. This includes:

  • Hotel elevators that require keycard authorization to reach guest floors
  • Fitness centers, spas, and business lounges
  • Pool gates and exterior entrance doors
  • Gated parking structures

Whenever a guest taps an authorized reader associated with the hotel’s access control system, the digital key automatically provides the required permission.

Security and Privacy Architecture

Digital hotel keys rely on the Secure Element—a dedicated, industry-certified chip inside the iPhone and Apple Watch designed to store sensitive data. Key credentials are never shared with Apple, and Apple does not track when or where a user uses the key.

If a guest needs to change rooms or extend their stay, the hotel can remotely update the key in Apple Wallet without requiring a visit to the front desk. Once the guest checks out, the digital key is automatically archived and deactivated, preventing unauthorized access after departure. In the event of a lost device, digital keys can be suspended or removed remotely using the Find My network.
