Free Temporary iCloud Storage for iOS 15 Migration

Apple's iOS 15 introduced a feature that grants users unlimited, temporary iCloud backup storage to facilitate smooth device migrations without requiring an upgraded iCloud+ storage plan. This feature ensures that users who exceed the standard free 5GB limit can still perform a complete, secure cloud backup of their current iPhone or iPad, allowing them to restore all apps, settings, and personal data directly onto a newly purchased device at no extra cost.

How Temporary iCloud Storage Works

Normally, users with more data than their iCloud plan allows cannot perform a full backup without paying for additional storage. With the iOS 15 migration tool, Apple temporarily removes this restriction. When a user prepares to switch to a new device, iOS allocates as much free cloud storage as needed to capture the entire state of the existing device.

This temporary backup remains available in iCloud for up to 21 days. If the new device does not arrive within that timeframe, users can request an additional 7-day extension within their settings before the data is automatically deleted.

Step-by-Step Migration Process

To utilize this temporary storage feature, follow these steps:

  1. Access the Migration Tool: On the current device running iOS 15 or later, open Settings, tap General, and select Transfer or Reset [Device].
  2. Initiate Backup: Under the "Prepare for New iPhone" section, tap Get Started.
  3. Turn On Cloud Backup: If prompted that iCloud storage is full, select the option to turn on iCloud Backup to proceed with the temporary allocation.
  4. Complete the Backup: Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi until the backup finishes uploading. The system displays a confirmation status once the backup is complete.

Restoring to the New Device

Once the new device is powered on, proceed through the standard setup assistant. When prompted to transfer data, select Restore from iCloud Backup and sign in with the same Apple ID used on the previous device. Choose the temporary backup from the list to begin restoring apps, photos, and configurations.

After the data successfully transfers to the new device, the temporary backup is automatically removed from Apple's servers, leaving the standard iCloud storage tier unaffected.
