Free Temporary iCloud Backup for iOS 15 Migration
Starting with iOS 15, Apple introduced a feature that provides users with free, temporary iCloud storage to seamlessly transfer data to a new iPhone or iPad. This utility resolves the common barrier where a user's data exceeds the standard free 5GB iCloud limit, allowing a complete cloud-based backup and restore without subscribing to a paid iCloud+ plan.
The Problem It Solves
Under standard conditions, Apple provides 5GB of free iCloud storage per Apple ID. Because modern devices typically hold dozens or hundreds of gigabytes of photos, apps, and system data, standard backups frequently fail due to insufficient space. Prior to iOS 15, users were forced to either purchase an iCloud+ tier, tether their devices to a computer using Finder/iTunes, or keep both devices physically close during a direct device-to-device migration. The temporary backup feature removes these limitations entirely.
How Temporary Storage Works
When preparing to set up a new device, iOS 15 grants access to as much cloud storage as required to complete a full backup, regardless of your current storage plan or remaining quota.
Key characteristics of this temporary allocation include:
- Unlimited Capacity: The system temporarily allocates whatever capacity is needed—whether it is 30GB or 512GB—to capture your apps, data, and settings.
- 21-Day Validity: Once created, the temporary backup remains available in iCloud for 21 days.
- Extension Option: If your new device does not arrive within the 21-day window, you can request an additional 21 days directly from the Settings app before the backup expires.
- Automatic Deletion: Once the data is restored onto the new device, the temporary backup expires and is permanently removed from Apple’s servers, returning your account to its standard storage quota without any recurring charges.
How to Initiate the Temporary Backup
To use this feature, the existing device must be running iOS 15 or later:
- Open Settings on the current iPhone or iPad.
- Tap General, then scroll down and select Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Under the Prepare for New iPhone banner, tap Get Started.
- If your iCloud backup is currently turned off or lacks space, the system will inform you that you are eligible for free extra storage. Tap Continue.
- If prompted, turn on Backup for all apps and data. The device will then upload the backup to iCloud.
Restoring Data to the New Device
Once the backup finishes uploading, turn on the new iPhone or iPad and proceed through the initial Setup Assistant. When prompted on the Apps & Data screen, select Restore from iCloud Backup and sign in with the same Apple ID. Choose the temporary backup from the list to begin transferring your settings, applications, and files. Once the setup completes, all your data will be in place on the new hardware.
