Face ID With a Mask Setup Changes in iOS 15

Apple introduced the ability to unlock an iPhone while wearing a face covering in iOS 15.4. This update brought specific design and workflow changes to the Face ID setup layout, streamlining how users configure facial recognition around the eye area. Below is a breakdown of the visual and structural interface changes introduced during the setup process.

The Dedicated Splash Screen

When updating to iOS 15.4 or setting up a compatible device (iPhone 12 and newer), users are greeted with a dedicated full-screen onboarding prompt. Unlike the traditional setup that immediately launches the camera scanner, this screen presents two distinct options:

  • Use Face ID with a Mask: Initiates the enhanced setup process.
  • Don't Use Face ID with a Mask: Retains standard full-face authentication.

The interface includes explanatory text beneath the graphic, clarifying that Face ID will recognize the unique features around the eye area to authenticate the user and that accuracy requires looking directly at the screen.

Scan Process Visual Indicators

During the actual scanning process, the user interface clarifies that a mask is not worn while performing the scan:

  • No Mask Notice: A visual notification reminds the user to keep their face uncovered during registration.
  • Eye-Level Positioning Guide: The scanning circle interface provides modified instructional text, prompting the user to center their face and rotate their head so the TrueDepth camera can capture detailed angles of the periocular region.

The "Add Glasses" Flow

Because eye-area recognition is sensitive to eyewear, the setup layout introduces a secondary step specifically for glasses:

  • Post-Scan Prompt: After the initial mask-compatible scan, the interface prompts users who wear glasses to perform an additional scan with their glasses on.
  • Sunglasses Exclusion Notice: A warning text box appears, notifying the user that "Face ID with a Mask" does not support sunglasses, as the eyes must remain fully visible.
  • Multi-Pair Setup: In the system settings, a dedicated "Add Glasses" button appears beneath the mask toggle, allowing users to register multiple frames individually.

Changes Within Settings

For users who skipped the initial setup, the layout within Settings > Face ID & Passcode received adjustments:

  • New Toggle Placement: A dedicated toggle labeled "Use Face ID with a Mask" is positioned directly beneath the primary Face ID authentication settings.
  • Sub-Menu Options: Enabling this toggle alters the list view below it, dynamically revealing the "Add Glasses" option alongside existing biometric controls.
