Customize Text Size for Each App in iOS 15

Apple introduced a major accessibility upgrade in iOS 15 that allows users to adjust text size on an app-by-app basis rather than applying a universal setting across the entire operating system. This capability, driven by the Per-App Settings menu and an updated Control Center widget, gives users granular control over typography for improved readability without disrupting layouts in apps where standard sizing is preferred.

Method 1: Adjust Text Size via Control Center

The fastest way to change text size for an individual app is using the Control Center toggle while the app is active.

  1. Add Text Size to Control Center: Open Settings, select Control Center, and tap the green + icon next to Text Size if it is not already included.
  2. Open the Target App: Launch the specific application you want to customize.
  3. Open Control Center: Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen (or swipe up from the bottom on devices with a Home button).
  4. Tap the Text Size Control: Tap the aA icon.
  5. Select App Only: At the bottom of the screen, tap the toggle labeled [App Name] Only instead of All Apps.
  6. Adjust the Slider: Slide your finger up or down to increase or decrease the font size for that application.

Method 2: Configure Per-App Accessibility Settings

For permanent configuration and additional typographic adjustments, iOS 15 includes a dedicated Per-App Settings section within the Accessibility menu.

  1. Open Settings on your iOS device.
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and select Per-App Settings.
  4. Tap Add App and select the application you wish to modify from the list. You can also customize the Home Screen independently from this menu.
  5. Tap the name of the app once it appears in your list.
  6. Select Larger Text and use the slider to set your preferred font size. You can also toggle Larger Accessibility Sizes at the top for even bigger text options.
  7. Optional: In the same menu, you can toggle Bold Text, Button Shapes, or Increase Contrast specifically for that selected app.

Requirements and Compatibility

These customization options rely on Dynamic Type, Apple's typography framework. While all native iOS apps and the vast majority of modern third-party apps support Dynamic Type, any app that uses hardcoded font sizes instead of Apple's system font scales will not reflect these text size adjustments. Changes made to an individual app persist across device restarts until manually reset back to default.
