Customize Smart Stack Widget Rotation in iOS 15
Apple's iOS 15 update introduced meaningful refinements to Home Screen widgets, giving users greater control over how Smart Stacks display and rotate information throughout the day. This article covers the specific rotation logic enhancements introduced in iOS 15—most notably the addition of Widget Suggestions alongside the Smart Rotate feature—and details how to configure these settings to personalize your Home Screen experience.
New Rotation Options in iOS 15
In iOS 14, Smart Stacks relied purely on pre-selected widgets that rotated automatically using Siri intelligence. With iOS 15, Apple expanded this logic by introducing two distinct controls within the stack management interface:
- Widget Suggestions: This brand-new feature allows iOS to automatically insert and display widgets you haven't manually added to the stack. If the system detects a relevant activity or context—such as upcoming calendar events, fitness milestones, or media playback—it surfaces a recommended widget directly inside the stack. When you find a suggested widget useful, you can tap the plus (+) icon on it to permanently keep it in the rotation.
- Smart Rotate Enhancements: While Smart Rotate debuted in iOS 14, iOS 15 refined its underlying predictive algorithms. The system better recognizes recurring daily habits, location triggers, and device usage patterns to present the most relevant widget at any specific moment among the ones already in the stack.
How to Customize Smart Stack Rotation Logic
You can manage these rotation options directly on your Home Screen:
- Press and hold the Smart Stack you want to customize until the context menu appears.
- Tap Edit Stack.
- At the bottom of the editing interface, locate the two toggles:
- Smart Rotate: Turn this toggle off if you want the stack to stay fixed on whichever widget you manually swipe to, preventing automatic cycling.
- Widget Suggestions: Turn this toggle off if you only want the stack to display widgets you have explicitly added, preventing iOS from injecting unselected widgets into the rotation.
- Tap the close icon or anywhere outside the card to apply your changes.
By toggling these two features independently, iOS 15 allows you to choose between a fully dynamic experience with auto-rotation and smart recommendations, a strictly curated rotation of your chosen widgets, or a completely static multi-widget container.
