Customize iOS 15 Smart Stack Widget Suggestions
Apple's iOS 15 introduced enhanced customization tools for Home Screen Smart Stacks, offering users granular control over dynamic content. This update specifically overhauled how widgets rotate and appear automatically by introducing the Widget Suggestions feature alongside independent controls for Smart Rotate. Below is an overview of the specific tools and settings added to customize Smart Stack widget suggestions on iOS 15.
The Widget Suggestions Toggle
The primary addition in iOS 15 is the dedicated Widget Suggestions toggle. Previously, Smart Stacks only rotated through widgets that you manually added. In iOS 15, the system uses on-device intelligence to temporarily inject widgets from other apps based on your routine, location, or current activity.
To manage this tool:
- Long-press on any Smart Stack on your Home Screen.
- Select Edit Stack.
- Toggle the Widget Suggestions switch on or off at the bottom right of the editing screen.
Turning this off ensures the stack only displays widgets you have explicitly added, preventing iOS from inserting unexpected apps into the rotation.
Independent Smart Rotate Controls
Prior to iOS 15, automatic behavior was largely an all-or-nothing setting. iOS 15 separated stack automation into two distinct tools:
- Smart Rotate: Automatically cycles through your manually added widgets throughout the day based on perceived relevance.
- Widget Suggestions: Inserts new, unadded widgets into the stack.
Because these options are separate toggles within the "Edit Stack" menu, you can keep Smart Rotate enabled for your hand-picked widgets while completely disabling external Widget Suggestions, or vice versa.
Contextual Actions for Suggested Widgets
When iOS 15 introduces a suggested widget into your stack, it includes contextual controls accessible directly from the Home Screen:
- Add to Stack: Long-pressing a suggested widget allows you to permanently keep it in the stack without opening the full widget gallery.
- Don't Suggest App: If an irrelevant suggestion appears, long-pressing it gives you the option to block that specific app from ever appearing as a suggestion again.
Visual Stack Management
The iOS 15 stack editing interface visually distinguishes between your permanent widgets and active suggestions. Suggested widgets appear with an outline or dedicated indicator within the stack editor, allowing you to dismiss them immediately with a minus (-) icon or reorder your permanent widgets around them via drag-and-drop.
