Custom Tags in iOS 15 Notes and Reminders
Apple's iOS 15 introduced a unified tagging system to both the Notes and Reminders apps, fundamentally changing how users organize and retrieve information. By leveraging standard hashtags, the update allows users to categorize content dynamically, filter entries quickly via a dedicated Tag Browser, and build automated Smart Folders and Smart Lists based on custom tag rules.
Creating and Adding Tags
In both Notes and Reminders, custom tags are created by typing the
hash symbol (#) followed by a word or hyphenated phrase
anywhere within the text (e.g., #work,
#tax-2021).
- In Notes: Tags can be placed anywhere within the body of a note. Once typed, the text turns yellow, indicating it is an active tag.
- In Reminders: Tags can be typed directly into the reminder's title or notes field. Alternatively, tapping the dedicated Tag button above the keyboard allows users to select an existing tag or generate a new one.
As you type, an auto-complete menu suggests previously used tags to maintain consistency across your database.
The Tag Browser
Both apps feature a Tag Browser located at the bottom of the main list/folder view.
- The Tag Browser displays an alphabetical list of all active tags alongside the number of items associated with each tag.
- Users can tap a single tag to view all corresponding notes or reminders.
- Multi-tag filtering is supported: tapping multiple tags filters results to show only items containing all selected tags, enabling precise searches without needing complex text queries.
Smart Folders and Smart Lists
Alongside tags, iOS 15 introduced automated grouping based on custom tag criteria:
- Smart Folders (Notes): Users can create a Smart Folder that automatically gathers any note containing one or more specified tags. As new notes are created with those tags, they populate the Smart Folder automatically.
- Smart Lists (Reminders): Users can create customized Smart Lists filtered by chosen tags. This functionality can also combine tags with other parameters, such as dates, locations, or priorities.
Managing and Editing Tags
Tags can be managed directly from the Tag Browser:
- Long-pressing a tag brings up a contextual menu with options to rename or delete the tag.
- Renaming a tag updates it across all notes or reminders currently using it.
- Deleting a tag removes the tag from the system and converts the hashtagged text back into standard, unlinked text within the existing items.
