Custom Email Domain Setup with iCloud+ on iOS 15
Apple's iOS 15 allows iCloud+ subscribers to personalize their iCloud Mail addresses using a custom domain name. This article explains how the configuration works, guiding you through initiating the domain setup within iOS Settings, configuring the required DNS records with your domain registrar, and creating custom email addresses to send and receive messages directly through the Apple Mail app.
Prerequisites
Before starting, ensure you have:
- An active iCloud+ subscription (any paid storage tier).
- A device running iOS 15 or later.
- A registered domain name with access to its DNS management console (via providers such as GoDaddy, Cloudflare, or Namecheap).
- Two-Factor Authentication enabled on your Apple ID.
Step 1: Initiate Setup in iOS Settings
- Open the Settings app on your iOS 15 device.
- Tap your Apple ID banner at the top, then select iCloud.
- Select iCloud Mail (or Mail under iCloud settings).
- Tap Custom Email Domain.
- Choose who will use the domain: Only You or You and Your Family (Family Sharing allows up to five family members to create personalized addresses).
- Enter the domain name you wish to configure and tap Continue.
Step 2: Add Existing Email Addresses
If you already use email addresses associated with this domain, enter them during this step. Apple will send a verification code to those addresses to confirm ownership before proceeding. If you are starting fresh, you can skip this step and create new addresses later.
Step 3: Update DNS Records with Your Registrar
To route your domain's email traffic to iCloud servers, you must update the DNS settings at your domain registrar. iOS will display the exact records required:
- MX Records: Direct incoming mail to Apple's mail servers.
- TXT Records: Provide domain ownership verification and configure SPF (Sender Policy Framework) to prevent email spoofing.
- CNAME Records: Enable DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) to authenticate outgoing emails.
Log into your registrar's DNS management dashboard, remove any conflicting legacy mail records, and enter the records provided by Apple.
Step 4: Verify and Finalize
Once the DNS records are entered, return to the Custom Email Domain menu in your iOS Settings and tap Finish setup or Verify.
DNS propagation can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours. Once verified, Apple confirms the setup is complete. You can then create new custom email addresses directly from your device, designate your default sending address, and send or receive messages using the native iOS Mail app.
