Custom Email Domain on iCloud iOS 15 Setup
With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced the Custom Email Domain feature as part of its iCloud+ subscription tier. This functionality allows users to personalize their iCloud Mail address with a unique domain name while retaining standard iCloud services. Instead of setting up third-party mail servers, users can route their private domain through Apple’s infrastructure, enabling seamless email sending and receiving directly through the native iOS Mail app across all linked Apple devices.
Prerequisites for Linking a Custom Domain
To connect a custom domain to a personal iCloud account on iOS 15, you need:
- An active iCloud+ subscription (any paid iCloud storage tier).
- An Apple ID with two-factor authentication enabled.
- Ownership of a custom domain with access to its registrar settings to edit DNS records.
- A primary iCloud Mail address already established.
How the Integration Works
The custom domain acts as an alias layer over your existing iCloud Mail account. Apple handles incoming and outgoing message traffic, meaning emails sent to your custom address arrive in your standard iCloud inbox, and emails sent from the custom address use Apple’s outgoing servers.
Domain Setup via iCloud Settings: The initial domain verification is initiated through iCloud settings (via iOS 15 under Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Custom Email Domain, or via iCloud.com). You specify whether the domain is for personal use or shared with members of an iCloud Family Sharing group.
DNS Configuration: Apple provides specific DNS records that must be applied at your domain registrar. These include:
- MX Records: Direct incoming mail traffic to Apple's mail servers.
- TXT Records: Verify domain ownership and set up SPF (Sender Policy Framework) to prevent spoofing.
- CNAME Records: Configure DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) to authenticate outgoing emails.
Email Address Assignment: Once Apple verifies the DNS records, you can create up to three email addresses per domain for each user in your Family Sharing group. Each user can configure up to five custom domains.
Using the Custom Domain on iOS 15
After verification, the addresses automatically sync to iOS 15 Mail:
- Default Sending Address: You can set the custom email as your default sending address by navigating to Settings > Mail > Default Account or choosing the specific address under Composing settings.
- The Compose Window: When drafting a message in the
native Mail app, tapping the "From" field presents a drop-down menu
allowing you to switch between your standard
@icloud.comaddress and any configured custom domain addresses. - Unified Inbox: Incoming emails to the custom domain appear alongside standard iCloud emails, sharing the same folder structure, storage limits, and spam filtering mechanisms provided by iCloud+.
