Cross-Device Drag and Drop on iOS 15

Cross-device drag and drop allows users within the Apple ecosystem to seamlessly move text, images, and files between devices without manual file sharing or cloud uploads. Introduced during the iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 lifecycle—specifically via iPadOS 15.4 and macOS Monterey 12.3 through Universal Control—this functionality bridges the gap between touchscreens and desktop interfaces. This guide explains how cross-device drag and drop works, the technology powering it, and the steps required to use it.

How Universal Control Powers Cross-Device Drag and Drop

The primary mechanism for cross-device drag and drop is Apple’s Universal Control. While standard iOS 15 on an iPhone introduced cross-app drag and drop on a single screen, true cross-device dragging operates between iPadOS 15.4 and macOS 12.3 or later.

Universal Control links an iPad and a Mac using proximity and network detection. Once connected, a single mouse, trackpad, or keyboard controls both devices. A user can click a file on an iPad, drag it past the edge of the display onto a Mac's desktop, and release it to complete a direct transfer.

Requirements for Cross-Device Functionality

To enable cross-device drag and drop between an iPad running iPadOS 15 and a Mac:

  • Apple ID: Both devices must be signed into the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication.
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff must be enabled on both devices.
  • Proximity: Devices must be within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other.
  • Hardware Settings: Neither device can be actively sharing its cellular or internet connection via Personal Hotspot.

How to Use Cross-Device Drag and Drop

  1. Position the Devices: Place the iPad next to the Mac.
  2. Establish the Link: Push the Mac’s cursor past the left or right edge of the display in the direction of the iPad. An indicator bar appears on the iPad’s screen edge, followed by the cursor jumping into iPadOS.
  3. Select and Drag: Click and hold the desired file, photo, or block of text on one device.
  4. Move Across Screens: Drag the item across the screen boundary onto the secondary device.
  5. Drop the File: Release the cursor to place the item directly into an open app, document, or the desktop.

iPhone Capabilities in iOS 15: Cross-App Drag and Drop

While iPhones running iOS 15 do not support Universal Control due to the lack of cursor-sharing hardware integration, iOS 15 introduced system-wide multi-touch drag and drop across apps.

To use cross-app drag and drop on an iPhone:

  1. Tap and hold an item (such as an image or link) with one finger until it lifts.
  2. Maintain contact with that finger while using a second finger to swipe up to the Home screen or switch apps.
  3. Open the destination app (such as Messages, Notes, or Mail).
  4. Release the item into the destination field to insert it.

For moving data between an iPhone and other devices, iOS 15 relies on Universal Clipboard, which allows copied data on the iPhone to be pasted instantly onto a nearby Mac or iPad via the same underlying Handoff protocol.
