Copy Phone Numbers with Live Text on iOS 15
Apple's iOS 15 introduced Live Text, a computer vision feature that uses on-device intelligence to recognize and interact with text in the physical world. This article explains how Live Text identifies phone numbers on store displays, how the underlying technology works, and the exact steps required to copy or dial those numbers directly using your iPhone camera or the Photos app.
How Live Text Recognizes Numbers
Live Text uses the Apple Neural Engine found in the A12 Bionic chip and newer processors to perform real-time Optical Character Recognition (OCR). When your camera viewfinder frames a physical surface—such as a storefront window, business card, or printed sign—the operating system analyzes the shapes of the characters.
Because the system is trained to recognize standard data formats, it automatically differentiates regular text from actionable information like email addresses, physical addresses, and telephone numbers. When a string of numbers matches a phone format, iOS 15 adds contextual data detection, turning the static text into an interactive link.
Copying a Number Using the Camera App
You do not need to take a photo to capture a phone number from a storefront. You can do it directly through the live camera feed:
- Open the Camera app on your iPhone.
- Point the lens at the store display containing the phone number.
- Look for a yellow bracket outlining the text, followed by the Live Text icon (three lines inside a small frame) appearing in the bottom-right corner of the viewfinder.
- Tap the Live Text icon to freeze the frame on the detected text.
- Tap and hold the highlighted phone number.
- Select Copy from the pop-up menu to save the number to your clipboard, or tap Call to dial it immediately.
Copying a Number from an Existing Photo
If you have already snapped a picture of a storefront, you can extract the number later:
- Open the Photos app and select the image of the display.
- Tap the Live Text icon in the bottom-right corner of the image.
- Tap the highlighted phone number, or touch and drag to select the digits manually.
- Choose Copy from the contextual menu.
System Requirements
Live Text requires an iPhone equipped with an A12 Bionic processor or later running iOS 15. This includes the iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and all newer models. To ensure the feature is active, navigate to Settings > Camera and toggle on Show Detected Text.
