Copy Phone Numbers from Photos with iOS 15 Live Text

Apple’s iOS 15 introduced Live Text, a feature that uses on-device intelligence to recognize and extract text directly from images. By leveraging machine learning, your iPhone can identify a phone number printed on a store sign within a photo and convert it into interactive text. This allows you to place a call immediately or copy the digits straight into your Phone dialer without manually retyping them.

How Live Text Works Behind the Scenes

Live Text relies on the Apple Neural Engine and advanced Optical Character Recognition (OCR). When you take a photo of a storefront or view an existing image in the Photos app, the operating system analyzes the pixels locally on the device to detect alphanumeric characters.

Through built-in Data Detectors—the same framework iOS uses to identify links, dates, and addresses in Messages or Mail—the system parses the recognized text for standard phone number formats. Once a sequence of digits matches a telecommunication pattern, iOS flags that segment of the image as an actionable element.

Steps to Call or Copy a Number from an Image

You can interact with a phone number on a store sign through either the Camera app or the Photos app:

  1. Using the Camera in Real Time: Point your camera at the store sign. A yellow bounding box will frame the detected text, and a yellow Live Text icon will appear in the lower-right corner. Tap the icon, tap the highlighted phone number, and select Call to immediately launch the dialer, or tap Copy to place the number on your clipboard.
  2. Using the Photos App: Open a saved photo of the store sign in your photo library. Tap the Live Text icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen. iOS will highlight all detectable text. Tap the phone number to bring up the contextual menu, where you can tap the number to dial directly, add it to your contacts, or copy it.

Pasting into the Phone Dialer

If you choose to copy the phone number rather than calling directly from the prompt, open the Phone app and navigate to the Keypad tab. Tap and hold the empty space above the numeric keypad where dialed numbers appear, then select Paste. The extracted digits will immediately populate the screen, ready to be edited or called.

Hardware Requirements

Live Text requires an iPhone equipped with an A12 Bionic chip or newer running iOS 15 or later. This includes the iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and all subsequent models. The feature must also be enabled under Settings > General > Language & Region > Live Text.
