Copy Email from Business Card with iOS 15 Live Text
Apple’s iOS 15 introduced Live Text, a feature that uses on-device intelligence to recognize text within images, including photos of business cards. This technology allows users to interact with text inside the Photos app or Camera viewfinder just as they would with digital text. By leveraging advanced optical character recognition (OCR), Live Text instantly identifies patterns like email addresses, allowing you to copy them directly to your clipboard or launch an email draft with a single tap.
How the Technology Works
Live Text relies on the Apple Neural Engine found in devices with the A12 Bionic chip or newer. When an image contains text, deep learning models analyze the pixels locally on the device to detect characters, fonts, and layouts.
The system does not just read characters; it understands semantic context. When Live Text identifies the structure of an email address (such as the presence of an "@" symbol and a domain extension), it flags the text as an actionable data detector rather than static text.
Steps to Copy an Email Address from a Business Card
- Capture or Open the Image: Take a clear photo of the business card using the Camera app, or open an existing photo of the card in the Photos app.
- Activate Live Text: In the bottom-right corner of the image, tap the Live Text icon (a small square with text lines inside). This highlights all detected text in the image.
- Select the Email: Locate the email address on the business card. Tap and hold the address with your finger.
- Copy the Address: From the contextual pop-up menu, select Copy. The email address is now saved to your clipboard, ready to be pasted into contacts, notes, or any messaging app.
Alternatively, tapping directly on the detected email address will automatically trigger iOS to open the default Mail app with a pre-addressed draft.
System Requirements
To use Live Text on iOS 15, your device must have an A12 Bionic chip or later (iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and newer models) and have Live Text enabled under Settings > General > Language & Region > Live Text.
