Changes to the Contact Share Sheet in iOS 15
With the release of iOS 15, Apple redesigned the system-wide share sheet to streamline how users send content to contacts and manage sharing actions. This update introduced significant visual and functional modifications, including clearer app badges on contact suggestion icons, an updated inset-grouped card design, tighter integration with system communication features, and a more structured hierarchy for third-party extensions and quick actions.
Contextual App Badging on Contact Avatars
The most noticeable update to the share sheet occurs in the top row of suggested contacts. In previous versions, users only saw a contact's avatar without clear indication of which messaging platform would be used to send the item. In iOS 15, Apple introduced app badges placed directly over the bottom-right corner of each contact's profile photo.
These small circular icons denote the exact communication channel—such as Messages, WhatsApp, or Mail—that will open upon tapping the contact. This prevents accidental sharing across the wrong platform and eliminates ambiguity when communicating with people across multiple messaging apps.
Inset-Grouped Visual Styling
iOS 15 updated the overall aesthetic of system sheets using an inset-grouped card design. The share sheet adopted softer, rounded container blocks rather than flat full-width separators. This matches the broader iOS 15 design language found in the Settings app and system modals, visually separating the contact row, app rows, and system actions into clear, rounded islands.
Improved Contact Card Sharing Previews
When sharing an individual contact card directly from the Contacts app or Phone app, the layout was updated to provide richer visual context. Instead of a generic vCard file link or simple text string, iOS 15 displays a formatted contact preview card at the top of the sheet. This preview prominently displays the contact's name, profile image, and primary details before sending, ensuring the user verifies the correct information is being transmitted.
Streamlined Action Rows and Customization
Below the contact and application rows, the vertical list of quick actions (such as Copy, Add to Reading List, or Save to Files) received better grouping and readability:
- Categorized Action Blocks: System actions are separated into distinct visual groups, isolating core clipboard functions from document-level tasks and third-party extensions.
- Simplified Reordering: Tapping "Edit Actions" provides a cleaner interface to toggle favorites, add shortcuts, or disable third-party app actions.
Integration with "Shared with You"
The share sheet in iOS 15 laid the groundwork for system-level content tracking. Sharing content with a contact through the redesigned sheet automatically integrates with the "Shared with You" feature, pinning shared links, photos, and media directly into the recipient's corresponding Apple apps (such as Safari, Photos, and Podcasts).
