Changes to Software Update Settings in iOS 15
With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced significant adjustments to how iPhone users manage, schedule, and receive system software updates. This article details the key changes made to the Software Update menu, including the ability to choose between two distinct software tracks, the separation of routine security patches from major feature upgrades, and the enhanced controls governing automatic overnight installations.
Choice Between Two Update Tracks
The most prominent change in iOS 15 was the introduction of a dual-track update option located in Settings > General > Software Update. Previously, Apple strongly nudged users toward the latest major operating system version as soon as it became available.
With iOS 15, Apple allowed users to remain on the previous major version (iOS 14) while still receiving essential security updates. In the Software Update panel, the system displayed two separate options:
- Current Version Security Updates: Displayed as the primary, immediate update to keep the current OS secure without altering the user experience.
- Upgrade to iOS 15: Displayed as an optional upgrade path at the bottom of the screen, allowing users to transition to the new feature set whenever they were ready.
Granular Automatic Update Controls
Apple refined the sub-menu for Automatic Updates to give users clearer scheduling authority over data consumption and installation downtime. The settings provided two independent toggles:
- Download iOS Updates: When enabled, the device automatically downloads update files in the background when connected to Wi-Fi. It does not initiate the installation process.
- Install iOS Updates: When enabled alongside downloads, the device schedules installation automatically during off-peak hours (typically overnight).
By separating these two actions, users gained the flexibility to pre-download large firmware files automatically while retaining full manual control over when the device restarts and applies the update.
Scheduled Installation Requirements
For users who kept automated installation scheduled, iOS 15 enforced specific criteria before proceeding with an overnight installation:
- The iPhone must be connected to Wi-Fi.
- The device must be plugged into power and charging.
- The battery must be above a specific threshold (or charging continuously).
- The device must be locked and inactive during the scheduled window (typically between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM).
Users received a persistent lock-screen notification beforehand stating that the update was scheduled to install overnight, along with the option to cancel the installation if needed.
