Cellular Data Settings Changes in iOS 15

Apple refined the cellular settings menu in iOS 15 to improve 5G connectivity management, introduce privacy protections, and provide greater control over how system services consume mobile data. These updates reorganized existing toggles and added several new preference options directly within the Settings app under Cellular (or Mobile Data in select regions).

Enhanced Data Modes for 5G

Under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode, iOS 15 expanded data consumption modes to leverage 5G networks:

  • Allow More Data on 5G: Prioritizes 5G network performance over Wi-Fi for system tasks, enabling higher-definition FaceTime calls, high-resolution Apple TV content, Apple Music songs, and operating system updates directly over mobile networks.
  • Standard: Permits automatic background tasks and standard-definition video streaming over cellular, balancing performance and data usage.
  • Low Data Mode: Pauses automatic updates, background app refreshes, and cloud syncing to reduce overall data consumption on metered or limited plans.

iCloud Backup Over Cellular

Prior to iOS 15, full iCloud backups typically required a Wi-Fi connection. iOS 15 introduced a dedicated Backup Over Cellular toggle within the Cellular menu. When enabled on compatible devices, users can perform complete iCloud backups using cellular networks, provided their carrier and data plan support the feature.

Limit IP Address Tracking

To complement the introduction of iCloud Private Relay, iOS 15 added a Limit IP Address Tracking toggle inside the Cellular Data Options menu. Enabling this feature masks the device's IP address from known trackers across Safari and Mail while connected to cellular data, preventing advertisers and third-party trackers from profiling user activity based on network connection.

5G Standalone Toggle

For carriers supporting next-generation network architecture, iOS 15 added a 5G Standalone toggle under Voice & Data. This option allows the iPhone to operate entirely on 5G network infrastructure without relying on fallback LTE core networks, optimizing latency and connection stability.

Interface and Dual SIM Improvements

iOS 15 streamlined the user interface for multi-line users. The menu improved the labeling and separation between primary and secondary lines, making it easier to assign distinct data modes, toggle Allow Cellular Data Switching, and monitor per-app data usage independently for each SIM card.
