Apple Podcasts iOS 15 Updates and UX Changes

Apple introduced several meaningful user experience updates to the Podcasts app with the release of iOS 15, focusing on streamlined navigation, social sharing, and refined content discovery. Following the controversial redesign in iOS 14.5 that accompanied the rollout of paid subscriptions, iOS 15 addressed user feedback by clarifying subscription terminology, improving library management, and integrating system-wide features like Shared with You.

"Shared with You" Integration

One of the most prominent additions to iOS 15 was the system-wide "Shared with You" feature. When contacts send podcast links through the Messages app, those episodes automatically appear in a dedicated "Shared with You" section inside the Podcasts app’s Listen Now tab. Users can tap the sender's name directly from the Podcasts app to reply in Messages without switching apps manually.

The Shift from "Subscribe" to "Follow"

To prevent confusion between free shows and newly introduced paid premium subscriptions, Apple completely replaced the traditional "Subscribe" button with a "Follow" button. In iOS 15, tapping the plus icon (+) or "Follow" ensures that new episodes are tracked in the user's library without implying a recurring monetary charge.

Redesigned Show Pages and Channels

Show pages received visual refinements to reduce clutter and make episode selection more intuitive. Episode art became larger and easier to scan, while full descriptions were made accessible without leaving the current screen. Furthermore, iOS 15 refined the presentation of "Channels," allowing podcast networks to group multiple related shows into curated hubs, making multi-show exploration straightforward.

Granular Notification Controls

iOS 15 introduced individualized notification settings directly within show pages. Instead of relying purely on global notification settings, listeners can toggle alerts on a show-by-show basis to receive instant notifications whenever a specific favorite creator publishes a new episode.

Streamlined Playback and Episode Management

The app streamlined how episodes are saved and downloaded. Apple refined the episode context menus to make common actions—such as marking an episode as played, removing downloads, or saving an episode to the library—faster to access via long-press menus. Clearer indicators were also introduced to help users instantly distinguish between streamed episodes, downloaded episodes, and unfinished plays.
