Apple Maps Interactive Globe Features in iOS 15

With the release of iOS 15, Apple introduced a fully interactive 3D globe to Apple Maps, replacing the traditional flat Mercator projection view. This update transforms how users explore the planet by delivering high-resolution geographic details, realistic lighting effects, custom-rendered 3D landmarks, and fluid transitions from outer space down to street level.

A True Three-Dimensional Sphere

Prior to iOS 15, zooming out completely in Apple Maps displayed a flat, two-dimensional world map that distorted landmass sizes near the poles. The interactive globe models the Earth as an accurate 3D sphere. Users can freely spin, tilt, and rotate the globe with multi-touch gestures, providing an accurate sense of scale and distance across continents and oceans.

Enhanced Geographic and Terrain Details

The 3D globe features substantially upgraded texture maps and geological data. Natural environments are rendered with rich detail, allowing users to visually distinguish between:

  • Mountain ranges with accurate elevation and shading
  • Dense rainforests and arid deserts
  • Glaciers, ice caps, and polar regions
  • Ocean trenches and varying water depths

Real-Time Lighting and Day-Night Cycles

The interactive globe integrates real-time illumination based on the Earth's rotation and the position of the sun. As you rotate the globe, you can see daylight across illuminated hemispheres alongside a dark mode that reflects nighttime on the opposing side. Nighttime regions display city lights glowing across metropolitan corridors, accompanied by a subtle atmospheric haze along the planet’s curvature.

Custom 3D Landmarks

Zooming in from the planetary view to major metropolitan areas reveals custom-designed 3D models for prominent landmarks, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Colosseum, and the Statue of Liberty. In addition to daytime modeling, these landmarks feature custom evening lighting that automatically activates when viewing them at night or using system-wide Dark Mode.

Seamless Zoom to City Experiences

The globe is completely integrated with Apple Maps' detailed city experience. Instead of reloading or switching interfaces, users can zoom seamlessly from orbit straight into detailed neighborhood views that feature elevation data, road markings, custom turn lanes, and 3D tree canopies.

Device Requirements

Due to the computational demands of rendering real-time 3D textures, lighting, and terrain models, the interactive globe feature requires an iPhone or iPad powered by an Apple A12 Bionic chip or newer (iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and later models).
