What Happens When iOS 12 App Limit Is Reached?
When an App Limit is reached on iOS 12, the operating system restricts access to the designated app by locking its interface behind a dedicated Screen Time screen. The app’s icon dims on the Home screen, push notifications are suppressed, and the user is prevented from using the application unless they manually extend their time or enter a Screen Time passcode.
Visual Changes on the Home Screen
As soon as the daily allowance expires, the app icon on your Home screen darkens. A small hourglass icon also appears directly beside the application's name, providing an immediate visual cue that the daily time allocation has run out.
The Time Limit Splash Screen
If you attempt to launch an app that has hit its limit, iOS 12 blocks you from viewing the app's contents. Instead, a full-screen white or dark overlay appears displaying:
- A large hourglass graphic.
- The message: "Time Limit: You've reached your limit on [App Name]."
- An option at the bottom labeled "Ask For More Time" or "Ignore Limit."
Options to Bypass or Extend Time
How you can interact with the limit depends on whether a Screen Time passcode has been configured:
- Without a Screen Time Passcode: The user has full control to bypass the limit. Tapping "Ignore Limit" presents two choices: "Remind Me in 15 Minutes" (which temporarily unlocks the app and alerts you again after 15 minutes) or "Ignore Limit for Today" (which removes the restriction entirely until midnight).
- With a Screen Time Passcode (Parental Controls): If the limit was set by a parent or protected by a four-digit PIN, the user cannot bypass it freely. Tapping "Ask For More Time" requires the entry of the Screen Time passcode. Once entered, the supervisor can approve access for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or the rest of the day. Without the PIN, the user cannot access the app.
Notifications and Background Activity
When the limit expires, iOS 12 mutes incoming notifications from that specific app to minimize distractions. The alerts will not light up the lock screen or display banners, though they may still collect silently in the Notification Center depending on your system configuration.
The Midnight Reset
App Limits function on a 24-hour cycle based on your device's local clock. At 12:00 AM every night, the timer automatically resets to zero, the app icon returns to its normal brightness, and access is fully restored for the new day.
