Voice Memos Redesign in iOS 12: What Changed

With the release of iOS 12, Apple overhauled its built-in Voice Memos app, introducing a modern visual interface and extending the utility beyond the iPhone. This article covers the major redesign changes made to Voice Memos, including its debut on the iPad, an updated user interface, seamless iCloud synchronization, and smarter recording and editing features.

Debut on iPad

Prior to iOS 12, Voice Memos was exclusively an iPhone app. The update officially brought the application to the iPad. To take advantage of the larger screen, Apple implemented a multi-panel layout: a sidebar on the left displays all saved recordings, while the right pane shows the active waveform, playback controls, and editing tools. The iPad version also supported multitasking features like Split View and Slide Over.

Modern Dark Interface

Apple stripped away the dated, skeuomorphic, and plain white aesthetic from earlier versions in favor of a sleek, dark-themed user interface. The modern look places a dynamic, interactive audio waveform front and center on a black background, with prominent red record buttons and crisp blue playback toggles, creating higher contrast and better visual focus during playback and recording.

iCloud Synchronization

iOS 12 introduced native iCloud support for Voice Memos. Recordings made on an iPhone automatically sync to an iPad and a Mac (introduced alongside macOS Mojave). This eliminated the need to manually share audio files via AirDrop, email, or iTunes file sharing to access them on other Apple devices.

Location-Based Naming

Voice Memos added an automated naming feature utilizing Location Services. Instead of labeling every recording sequentially (such as "New Recording 1", "New Recording 2"), the app began automatically naming audio files based on the physical location where the recording took place, provided the user granted location permissions. Users retained the option to switch back to sequential naming in the device settings.

Improved Editing and Replacement Tools

The editing interface was redesigned for greater precision. Users can trim recordings or replace portions of an existing clip directly within the main waveform display by tapping the "Edit" button. The scrubber allows fine-tuned manipulation, letting users scroll through seconds or milliseconds before initiating a re-record or a trim.

Audio Quality Settings

iOS 12 added an audio quality toggle inside the system Settings menu for Voice Memos. Users were given the option to choose between compressed AAC audio (to save storage space) or uncompressed, lossless audio (for professional and higher-fidelity recordings).

Recently Deleted Folder

To prevent accidental loss of important audio files, iOS 12 implemented a "Recently Deleted" folder within Voice Memos, mirroring the functionality in the Photos app. Trashed memos are held for a customizable duration (such as immediately, after 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, or never) before being permanently erased.
