Share High-Res Photos with iCloud Links in iOS 12
iOS 12 introduced a streamlined way to share full-resolution photos and videos via temporary iCloud links, eliminating the file compression typically caused by email or text messaging. This article outlines the specific options and capabilities available when generating, sending, and managing iCloud photo links on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 12.
Original Quality Preservation
When you share photos using an iCloud link in iOS 12, the recipient receives the media in its original, uncompressed format. This includes:
- Full-Resolution Stills: JPEG, HEIF, and RAW files retain their full pixel dimensions and dynamic range.
- Live Photos and Metadata: Live Photos keep their embedded video components, and all EXIF data (including capture date, camera settings, and geotags) remains intact.
- High-Definition Video: Videos are delivered in their original capture resolution, including 4K at various frame rates, rather than standard-definition compressed previews.
Recipient Access and Download Options
iCloud links work across different operating systems and devices, providing options depending on the recipient's platform:
- iOS and macOS Users: Recipients on Apple devices can open the link directly within the Photos app. They can view the items, download individual files, or tap "Add All" to import the entire batch directly into their own iCloud Photo Library.
- Non-Apple and Web Users: Recipients on Android, Windows, or Linux can open the link in any modern web browser. The web interface offers full-resolution previews and allows users to download the original media files individually or as a combined ZIP archive.
Expiration and Link Management
iCloud links do not consume the recipient's iCloud storage, and the sender maintains control over the shared files through the Photos app:
- 30-Day Expiration: Every iCloud link generated in iOS 12 is temporary and automatically expires 30 days after creation, after which the link becomes inactive.
- Manual Revocation: Senders can revoke access at any time before the 30-day limit. By navigating to the For You tab in the Photos app and selecting Recently Shared, you can view active links, copy the link again to share with more people, or select Stop Sharing to immediately disable access for all recipients.
