Set Up Family Sharing for Screen Time in iOS 12

Managing your child’s device usage is simple using Apple’s Screen Time feature integrated with Family Sharing in iOS 12. This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on how to connect your family accounts, enable Screen Time remotely from a parent's device, configure usage limits, and secure the settings with a dedicated passcode.

Step 1: Set Up Family Sharing

Before configuring Screen Time for family members, ensure that Family Sharing is active on your device.

  1. Open the Settings app on the organizer's device.
  2. Tap your Apple ID banner at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Set Up Family Sharing, select Get Started, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Add your child to the group by choosing Create a Child Account (for children under 13) or by inviting an existing Apple ID.

Step 2: Enable Screen Time for a Family Member

Once the family group is established, you can manage controls directly from your own iPhone or iPad.

  1. Open Settings on the parent’s device.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. Scroll down to the Family section and tap your child's name.
  4. Tap Turn On Screen Time.
  5. Tap Continue to proceed through the initial setup screens.

Step 3: Configure Restrictions and Limits

During setup, iOS 12 prompts you to establish initial boundaries, which can be modified at any time:

  • Downtime: Set a schedule during which only phone calls and pre-approved apps are available (e.g., bedtime).
  • App Limits: Set daily time allowances for specific app categories, such as Social Networking or Games.
  • Content & Privacy Restrictions: Block explicit content, restrict purchasing permissions, and enforce privacy settings.

Step 4: Create a Screen Time Passcode

To prevent your child from changing these settings or extending their time limits, you must set a security PIN.

  1. When prompted during the setup, enter a four-digit Parent Passcode.
  2. Re-enter the passcode to confirm.
  3. Make sure this passcode is different from the device passcode used to unlock the phone.

Once completed, you can view weekly activity reports and adjust restrictions for your child's device directly from the Screen Time menu on your own device.
