Set Unique Contact Notification Sounds in iOS 12

iOS 12 allows users to assign custom ringtones and text alert tones to specific contacts, enabling you to identify who is calling or messaging without looking at your screen. While you cannot set individual sounds for third-party messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger on a per-contact basis, native phone calls and SMS/iMessage notifications are fully customizable through the built-in Contacts app.

How to Assign Custom Tones to a Contact

To set a unique ringtone or text tone for an individual contact in iOS 12, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Contacts app, or launch the Phone app and tap the Contacts tab.
  2. Search for and select the person you want to customize.
  3. Tap Edit in the top-right corner of the contact card.
  4. Scroll down and tap Ringtone to change the incoming call sound, or tap Text Tone to change the message notification sound.
  5. Choose an alert sound from the list. You can also select Vibration at the top of the menu to assign a unique vibration pattern.
  6. Tap Done in the top-right corner of the tone selection screen, then tap Done again on the contact card to save your changes.

Setting Up Emergency Bypass

Within the Ringtone and Text Tone menus in iOS 12, there is also an option called Emergency Bypass. Switching this toggle on allows sounds and vibrations from that specific contact to come through even when Do Not Disturb is enabled or your iPhone is set to silent.
