Schedule Do Not Disturb for Calendar Events in iOS 12

Apple’s iOS 12 operating system allows you to automatically end Do Not Disturb mode when a calendar event finishes. While you cannot pre-schedule Do Not Disturb to trigger automatically for future events without manual activation, iOS 12 introduced a contextual feature in Control Center that ties quiet hours directly to current calendar entries. This guide explains how the feature works and how to activate it on your device.

How the Feature Works

In iOS 12, Apple expanded Do Not Disturb by adding intelligent, time-based, and location-based triggers. If you have an active meeting or appointment listed in your native Calendar app, your device automatically detects it and provides an option to mute notifications specifically for the duration of that appointment. Once the scheduled end time of the event arrives, Do Not Disturb turns off automatically.

Requirements

To use event-based Do Not Disturb, ensure the following:

  • Your device is running iOS 12 or later.
  • The appointment is saved in the native iOS Calendar app (synced Google, Outlook, or iCloud calendars also work as long as they appear in the native app).
  • The event has a defined start and end time.

How to Turn on Do Not Disturb for an Event

  1. Open Control Center: Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen (iPhone X or newer, and iPad) or swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen (iPhone 8 or older).
  2. Access DND Options: Firmly press (3D Touch) or press and hold the Do Not Disturb icon (the crescent moon).
  3. Select the Event Option: A contextual menu will appear. If an event is currently taking place or about to start, you will see the option Until the end of this event. Tap it.

A crescent moon icon will appear on your lock screen and in the status bar. As soon as the event's end time passes, the mode will turn off automatically, restoring your normal notification settings without any manual intervention.
