Memoji Reactions in iOS 12 iMessage

In iOS 12, you cannot send static Memoji stickers as standalone reactions in iMessage. While iOS 12 first introduced customizable Memoji avatars, the dedicated static Memoji sticker pack and the ability to easily use them as standalone reactions did not arrive until iOS 13. In iOS 12, Memoji functionality was strictly limited to animated recordings and camera overlays on devices equipped with a TrueDepth camera system.

During the iOS 12 release cycle, Apple treated Memoji primarily as an extension of Animoji. Users could only create short animated video clips or take photos using their avatar via the Messages app camera. These features required an iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR, as they relied directly on hardware-based facial tracking rather than pre-rendered 2D sticker poses.

Furthermore, standard message reactions in iOS 12 were limited to Apple’s built-in Tapback menu, which only offered six fixed options: Heart, Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down, HaHa, Exclamation Points, and Question Mark. While users could drag and drop third-party App Store stickers onto message bubbles to mimic custom reactions, there was no native Apple library of static Memoji poses to peel and stick.

Apple addressed this limitation with the release of iOS 13. That update introduced automatically generated static Memoji sticker packs built directly into the iOS keyboard, making them available across all devices capable of running the operating system, regardless of whether the device had a TrueDepth camera. With iOS 13 and later, users gained the ability to send static Memoji poses as standalone messages or drag them onto existing message bubbles to act as custom reactions. To use static Memoji stickers in this manner, an update to iOS 13 or newer is necessary.
