Measure Angles and Levels with iOS 12 Measure App
Apple’s iOS 12 introduced a built-in Measure app that allows users to accurately measure both angles and levels directly from their iPhone or iPad. By relocating the classic digital level tool from the Compass app to the Measure app, iOS 12 provides a dedicated utility that utilizes the device’s internal gyroscope and accelerometer. This article explains how to access and use these features to check surface levels and calculate precise angles.
Accessing the Level Tool
The leveling and angle measurement features are located directly inside the Measure app:
- Open the Measure app on your iOS 12 device.
- Tap the Level tab located in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Measuring Horizontal Levels
To check if a flat surface (such as a table or shelf) is level:
- Place your iPhone flat on its back on the surface.
- Two overlapping circles will appear on the screen alongside a degree readout.
- Adjust the surface until the two circles align perfectly and the display reads 0°.
- When completely level, the screen turns bright green.
Measuring Vertical Angles and Plumb
To measure vertical surfaces (such as picture frames, walls, or inclines):
- Place the edge of the iPhone against the object or surface you want to measure. You can use either the long edge or the top/bottom edge.
- The screen displays an artificial horizon line and the precise angle of tilt in degrees.
- If the surface is vertical or horizontal, the display will turn green at 0° or 90°.
Measuring Relative Angles
You can also measure the difference between two angles:
- Place the edge of the device against the first surface.
- Tap the screen once to zero out the measurement. The screen will turn red to indicate relative mode.
- Move the device to the second surface. The display will show the exact angular difference between the two surfaces.
- Tap the screen again to exit relative mode and return to absolute measurements.
