Managing Child Accounts with iOS 12 Screen Time

Apple's iOS 12 introduced Screen Time to help users understand and control their device usage, with parent accounts serving as the central administrative hub for managing children's devices. By integrating directly with Apple’s Family Sharing system, parent accounts allow guardians to remotely view detailed activity reports, set app limits, schedule downtime, restrict inappropriate content, and approve extension requests directly from their own devices.

Centralized Setup via Family Sharing

In iOS 12, parent accounts function as the administrators of the digital household. Through Apple’s Family Sharing feature, a parent designates an Apple ID as a child account. Once linked, the parent's device automatically gains administrative privileges over that child's device, eliminating the need to physically configure settings on the child's iPhone or iPad.

Remote Activity Monitoring

Parent accounts receive real-time, categorized activity reports detailing how the child spends time on their device. Parents can review:

  • Total screen time per day or week.
  • Specific apps used and for how long.
  • Frequency of device pickups.
  • Which apps send the most notifications.

Setting Downtime and App Limits

Parents have the authority to enforce boundaries on device usage:

  • Downtime: Parents can schedule specific hours (such as bedtime or study hours) during which only phone calls and pre-approved apps are accessible.
  • App Limits: Parents can allocate specific daily time allowances for broad categories (like Games or Social Networking) or individual applications. Once the limit expires, the apps are temporarily blocked.

Managing Content and Privacy Restrictions

Through the parent account, adults can configure Content & Privacy Restrictions to ensure age-appropriate use. This includes:

  • Restricting adult content in Safari, music, podcasts, and movies.
  • Preventing unauthorized iTunes and App Store purchases or app deletions.
  • Limiting location sharing and restricting changes to passcode or privacy settings.

Passcode Security and Approval Requests

All Screen Time rules enforced by a parent account are secured by a dedicated four-digit Screen Time passcode that is distinct from the device unlock code. When a child reaches their allocated limit, they can submit an "Ask For More Time" request. This request is sent directly to the parent account via notification, allowing the parent to approve or decline an additional 15 minutes, an hour, or all-day access remotely.
