Long Press Notification Options in iOS 12

In iOS 12, Apple overhauled the notification system to give users greater control and interactivity directly from the Lock screen, Notification Center, or active banner alerts. By long-pressing a notification banner—or using 3D Touch on compatible devices—users can access rich previews, perform app-specific quick actions, and manage future alerts through Instant Tuning without ever needing to launch the full application.

Rich Content Previews

Long-pressing an incoming banner expands the notification into a rich preview window. Depending on the app sending the alert, this expanded view provides deeper context:

  • Messages and Chat Apps: Displays recent conversation history leading up to the new message rather than just a single line of text.
  • Media and News: Plays audio clips, shows video snippets, or displays high-resolution images attached to news alerts or podcasts.
  • Smart Home and Security: Shows live camera snapshots or short video clips from HomeKit-enabled cameras and doorbells.
  • Maps and Travel: Provides real-time map overviews, flight status updates, or estimated arrival times for ridesharing services.

Inline Quick Actions

Directly below the rich preview, long-pressing reveals actionable buttons tailored to the specific application:

  • Quick Reply: Opens an inline keyboard to type and send a response immediately without leaving the current screen.
  • Mail Actions: Provides buttons to Mark as Read, Trash, or Archive emails directly from the preview.
  • Calendar and Reminders: Offers options to Accept, Decline, Complete, or Snooze events and tasks.
  • Third-Party Integrations: Allows specific interactions configured by developers, such as checking in for a flight, liking a post, or approving two-factor authentication requests.

Instant Tuning and Notification Management

iOS 12 introduced "Instant Tuning," accessible directly from the expanded notification interface. When you long-press a banner, you can tap the three-dot icon (...) in the upper-right corner to manage how that app delivers alerts in the future:

  • Deliver Quietly: Routes future notifications from that app directly to the Notification Center. The notifications bypass the Lock screen, do not display banners across the top of the display, play no sound, and do not show badge counts on the app icon.
  • Turn Off...: Immediately disables all notifications for that specific application without requiring navigation through the main iOS Settings menu.
  • Settings: Provides a direct shortcut to the app’s full notification settings inside the iOS Settings app to customize alert styles, sounds, and grouping preferences.
