iOS 12 Photos Search Terms and Categories

With the release of iOS 12, Apple introduced major enhancements to the Photos app search functionality, transforming it into an intelligent, proactive tool. This update brought a dedicated Search tab, multi-keyword query support, and automated search suggestions, alongside an expanded recognition index covering specific events, business locations, and thousands of new object and scene categories.

Intelligent Search Suggestions

Before entering a single character into the search bar, iOS 12 displays curated search suggestions under distinct groups:

  • Moments: Groups photos taken during specific times and locations, such as a weekend trip or day out.
  • People: Highlights recognized faces from your People album.
  • Places: Shows photos taken at nearby locations or memorable geographic regions.
  • Categories: Proactively presents common subjects such as beaches, cars, dogs, or sunsets.
  • Groups: Identifies photos where specific combinations of known people appear together.

Multi-Keyword Searching

iOS 12 introduced the ability to combine multiple search parameters to narrow down large photo libraries. Users can combine names, places, dates, and objects into a single search query—for example, searching "beach," "California," and "2017" to find specific vacation photos without manual browsing.

Events and Occasions

Apple indexed millions of real-world events into the search database. In iOS 12, users can search for photos based on specific occurrences, such as:

  • Holidays and Celebrations: Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's Day, and birthdays.
  • Live Events: Music festivals, concerts, and theatrical performances.
  • Sporting Events: Marathons, professional sports games, and local athletic activities.

Business and Venue Names

Search capabilities expanded beyond generic geographic locations (cities and states) to include specific points of interest. Photos geotagged at registered businesses or public spaces can be searched by the exact venue name, including:

  • Restaurants and cafes
  • Museums and historical landmarks
  • Stadiums, arenas, and convention centers
  • Retail stores and shopping malls

Expanded Object and Activity Categories

Apple significantly expanded its on-device machine learning library to identify a vast array of everyday items, activities, and scenes. New and refined visual categories introduced in iOS 12 include:

  • Activities: Surfing, hiking, cooking, swimming, and dancing.
  • Food and Drinks: Coffee, pizza, sushi, cocktails, and baked goods.
  • Objects and Animals: Specific vehicle types, musical instruments, pet breeds, and sports equipment.
  • Scenery: Mountains, forests, skylines, rivers, and sunsets.
