iOS 12 Password Management Features in Safari and Settings

Apple introduced major security and convenience upgrades in iOS 12 by integrating advanced password management tools directly into Safari and the Settings app. These native enhancements transformed iOS into a comprehensive credential manager by introducing automatic strong password generation, password reuse auditing, seamless SMS two-factor authentication autofill, and support for third-party password managers.

Automatic Strong Password Generation

When creating a new account or updating existing login details in Safari or supported apps, iOS 12 automatically generates and suggests a complex, unique password. These generated credentials are automatically saved to iCloud Keychain, syncing securely across all authorized Apple devices without requiring manual entry or external password-generating utilities.

Password Reuse Auditing

Within Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Website & App Passwords, iOS 12 introduced a security auditing feature that flags reused credentials. A small warning icon appears next to any account that shares a password with another service. Selecting the flagged account prompts the user with an option to navigate directly to the website to change the compromised or repeated password.

Security Code AutoFill for Two-Factor Authentication

To streamline two-factor authentication, iOS 12 reads incoming SMS one-time passcodes and displays them in the QuickType bar above the keyboard. Users can tap the code to insert it instantly into the verification field in Safari or compatible apps, eliminating the need to leave the browser or memorize numeric codes.

Third-Party Password Manager Integration

Apple opened its Password AutoFill framework to third-party developers in iOS 12. Users who rely on services like 1Password, LastPass, or Dashlane can enable them under Settings > Passwords & Accounts > AutoFill Passwords. This allows third-party managers to populate credentials directly in Safari and native apps identically to iCloud Keychain.

AirDrop Password Sharing

Users can securely transmit saved usernames and passwords from the Settings app to nearby iPhones, iPads, or Macs using AirDrop. This provides an encrypted, peer-to-peer method for sharing account access with family members or colleagues without using insecure messaging channels.

iOS 12 integrated password retrieval into Siri. Users can issue voice commands such as "Hey Siri, show me my password for [Website]," which immediately authenticates the user via Face ID or Touch ID and opens the specific entry in Settings.
