iOS 12 Notification Stacking in Messaging Apps
With the release of iOS 12, Apple introduced Grouped Notifications to solve the issue of cluttered lock screens caused by high-frequency alerts. For high-volume applications like messaging platforms, iOS 12 organizes incoming alerts into clean, layered stacks based on the app and individual conversation threads. This system prevents a burst of messages from monopolizing the display, allowing users to review, interact with, or dismiss entire batches of communication efficiently.
Thread-Level Intelligence
For messaging platforms such as Apple Messages, WhatsApp, and Slack, iOS 12 utilizes automatic, context-aware stacking rather than dumping every notification from the app into a single pile. The system analyzes incoming metadata and organizes notifications by conversation thread or contact.
If a user receives twenty messages from a busy group chat and three messages from an individual contact, iOS 12 generates two distinct stacks. The active group chat remains isolated in its own stack, while the direct messages are grouped separately. This ensures high-velocity group conversations do not bury important individual messages.
The Stack Interface and Interaction
Visually, grouped notifications appear as layered cards beneath the most recent alert, indicating that more content is hidden underneath. The bottom of the stack displays a badge showing how many additional notifications are grouped inside.
Interacting with stacked notifications is straightforward:
- Expanding Stacks: Tapping on a stack fans out all the grouped messages in chronological order, allowing the user to read through the thread history.
- Collapsing Stacks: Once expanded, tapping "Show Less" returns the notifications to their stacked state.
- Individual Interaction: Users can swipe or 3D Touch/long-press an individual alert within an expanded stack to reply inline without launching the app.
Bulk Management and Instant Tuning
High-volume apps often require quick management to reduce distractions. iOS 12 allows users to manage grouped notifications as a single unit:
- Clear All: Tapping the "X" icon on a stack clears the entire conversation thread at once, eliminating the need to dismiss notifications individually.
- Instant Tuning: Swiping left on a stack reveals a "Manage" option. From here, users can select "Deliver Quietly"—which routes future notifications directly to Notification Center without sounding an alert, vibrating, or waking the lock screen—or disable notifications for that app entirely.
Customization Options
While the default "Automatic" setting groups notifications by conversation thread, users can alter this behavior in the iOS Settings app under the notification preferences for any specific messaging app:
- Automatic: The default behavior that groups alerts by app and individual conversation threads.
- By App: Forces all incoming alerts from the application into a single stack, regardless of the sender or thread.
- Off: Disables grouping entirely, restoring the chronological, unstacked list used in earlier versions of iOS.
