iOS 12 Medical ID Lock Screen Updates
With the release of iOS 12, Apple enhanced its emergency preparedness features by streamlining Medical ID access directly from the lock screen and introducing backend integrations for first responders. These updates focused on making critical health information readily available to emergency personnel both physically, through the device's interface, and digitally during emergency calls, all without compromising device security.
Direct Access via the Emergency Screen
In iOS 12, accessing Medical ID from a locked iPhone remained intuitive and fast. Anyone holding the device can bypass the passcode screen to view life-saving data:
- Swipe up or press the Home button to bring up the passcode entry screen.
- Tap Emergency in the bottom-left corner.
- Tap Medical ID in the bottom-left corner of the emergency keypad.
Additionally, invoking the Emergency SOS screen—by holding the Side button and either Volume button on iPhone X and later, or rapidly pressing the Side/Top button five times on earlier models—presents the Medical ID slider directly alongside the power off and Emergency SOS sliders. Swiping this slider reveals the user's data instantly.
Automatic Data Sharing with First Responders
The most significant update in iOS 12 was the integration with Next Generation 911 (NG911) systems in the United States. When a user places an emergency call from their iPhone, iOS 12 securely and automatically transmits critical Medical ID information directly to emergency dispatchers via RapidSOS technology.
This feature ensures that first responders receive essential details—such as severe allergies, medical conditions, blood type, and emergency contacts—even if the caller is incapacitated or unable to communicate, bridging the gap between lock-screen accessibility and remote dispatch.
Lock Screen Privacy Controls
iOS 12 maintained strict privacy boundaries by keeping Medical ID visibility fully customizable. Users manage lock screen permissions through the Health app:
- Navigate to Medical ID within the Health app and select Edit.
- Toggle Show When Locked on or off.
When enabled, anyone can view medical notes, medications, and emergency contacts without entering a passcode, while all other personal data on the iPhone remains fully encrypted. When disabled, the Medical ID option is completely hidden from the lock screen and the Emergency SOS slider.
