iOS 12 Measure App Automatic Rectangle Detection
Apple’s iOS 12 introduced a built-in Measure app that can automatically detect the dimensions of rectangular objects using augmented reality. Powered by ARKit 2, the app scans the physical environment, recognizes standard geometric shapes like picture frames and documents, and instantly calculates their length, width, and surface area without requiring manual point-to-point placement.
How Automatic Detection Works in iOS 12
When opening the Measure app on a compatible device running iOS 12, the camera uses ARKit to evaluate the space. If the camera is pointed at a well-defined rectangular object—such as a framed photo, a book, or an envelope—a yellow or white bounding box automatically snaps around the edges of the object.
Tapping the detected box locks in the measurement, displaying the height, width, and total area. Users can also tap the measurement numbers to view conversions between imperial and metric units or tap the shutter button to take a photo of the measured object with its dimensions overlaid.
Device Compatibility
Automatic shape detection requires the computational capabilities of Apple's ARKit. In iOS 12, the Measure app and its automatic detection feature work on devices equipped with an Apple A9 processor or newer:
- iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and iPhone SE (1st generation) or later
- iPad (5th generation) or later
- iPad Pro (all models)
Older devices capable of running iOS 12 (such as the iPhone 5s or iPhone 6) do not support the Measure app.
Tips for Best Accuracy
While the automatic detection feature is fast, measurement accuracy depends on environmental factors:
- Lighting: Strong, even lighting helps the camera identify the edges of the object clearly.
- Contrast: The object should contrast with the surface it rests on; dark objects on dark surfaces are harder for the sensors to delineate.
- Angle and Distance: Holding the device roughly 2 to 4 feet away at a slight angle provides the best balance for depth calculation and edge detection.
The Measure app is intended for quick reference and ballpark estimates rather than precision carpentry or construction work.
