How to View Missed Notifications in iOS 12

iOS 12 introduced grouped alerts, making it easier to organize and catch up on missed activity through the Notification Center. This guide explains how to access the Notification Center from both the Lock screen and an unlocked device, how to expand and interact with notification stacks, and how to dismiss your missed alerts efficiently.

Accessing the Notification Center

  • From the Lock Screen: Swipe up from the middle of the screen to reveal older, missed notifications that are hidden below the current time and recent alerts.
  • From the Home Screen or an Open App: Swipe down from the top edge of the screen. On devices with Face ID (such as the iPhone X, XS, and XR), swipe down from the top-left or top-center of the screen to avoid opening the Control Center on the top-right.

Expanding Grouped Notifications

iOS 12 automatically stacks notifications by app and topic to reduce clutter.

  1. Locate the notification stack you want to review. It will appear with a layered effect behind the top alert.
  2. Tap the stack to expand it. This reveals every individual missed notification from that app or conversation.
  3. Tap Show Less at the top of the group when you are finished to collapse the stack back into a single card.

Interacting with Missed Alerts

  • Open an Alert: Tap directly on an individual notification to open the corresponding app.
  • Quick Actions: Swipe right on an alert to open it immediately, or swipe left to reveal options including Manage, View, and Clear.
  • Rich Previews: Press firmly on a notification (on devices with 3D Touch) or long-press it to view media previews, read full message threads, or reply directly without opening the app.

Clearing Missed Notifications

  • Clear a Group: Tap the X button located in the top-right corner of an expanded stack, then tap Clear.
  • Clear All Notifications: Press firmly using 3D Touch on the X button at the very top of the Notification Center list, then tap Clear All Notifications. On devices without 3D Touch, tap and hold the X button until the prompt appears.
