How to Use Group FaceTime in iOS 12 Messages
Apple's iOS 12 introduced a deep integration between Group FaceTime and the Messages app, allowing users to seamlessly transition from a text-based group conversation into a live video or audio call. Instead of creating a separate call and manually adding each person, iOS 12 embeds FaceTime controls directly into existing iMessage group threads, streamlining multi-person communication for up to 32 participants.
Starting a Group FaceTime from Messages
To launch a Group FaceTime call from an ongoing group chat:
- Open the target group conversation in the Messages app.
- Tap the contact avatars located at the top center of the screen to reveal the quick-action menu.
- Tap the FaceTime icon (video) or the Audio icon, depending on the preferred call type.
Once initiated, the call automatically rings all active members in the iMessage thread, eliminating the need to invite participants individually.
Joining an Ongoing Call from the Chat Transcript
When a Group FaceTime call is initiated from a group thread, an interactive message bubble appears directly inside the conversation transcript.
- Live Status: The chat bubble displays who started the call and indicates that the conversation is currently active.
- One-Tap Joining: Any participant in the group can enter the call at any time simply by tapping the green Join button inside the message bubble.
- Non-Intrusive Notifications: Group members receive a silent notification rather than a disruptive full-screen ringing interface, allowing individuals to join whenever they are ready without interrupting their current device usage.
Group Capacity and Fluid Multitasking
The integration supports calls of up to 32 people simultaneously. During a call, participants can minimize the FaceTime window to return to the Messages thread, allowing them to send links, photos, or text messages while remaining connected via video and audio. If a user leaves the call, they can jump back in at any point as long as the session remains active in the Messages thread.
