How to Share Memoji via AirDrop on iOS 12

This guide explains how Memoji sharing works on iOS 12, addresses the limitations regarding transferring editable avatar configurations, and provides step-by-step instructions for sharing Memoji content using AirDrop. While Apple introduced customizable Memoji with iOS 12 for the iPhone X and newer models, the operating system handles avatar data differently than standard media files.

Memoji Configuration Sharing Limitations

On iOS 12, Apple does not allow users to export, send, or AirDrop editable Memoji configurations to another person’s device. Memoji profiles are stored within the system data and are tied directly to an individual iCloud account. You cannot transfer a Memoji setup to another user for them to edit or adopt as their own avatar.

Syncing Memoji Configurations Across Your Own Devices

If you want your custom Memoji configuration to appear on another device you own, you do not need AirDrop. Instead, use iCloud synchronization:

  1. Open Settings on your iOS 12 device.
  2. Tap your Apple ID banner at the top.
  3. Select iCloud.
  4. Scroll down and ensure the Keychain toggle is set to On.
  5. Ensure the Messages toggle is also turned On.

As long as your secondary device is signed into the same Apple ID with these settings enabled, your custom Memoji configurations will automatically sync between them.

How to Share Memoji Recordings via AirDrop

While you cannot share the editable configuration file, you can record animated Memoji videos or capture still images and send them to nearby devices via AirDrop.

  1. Open the Messages app and enter a conversation.
  2. Tap the App Store icon next to the text field, then tap the Animoji (monkey) icon.
  3. Swipe across to select your custom Memoji.
  4. Tap the red Record button to capture an expression or voice message (up to 30 seconds).
  5. Tap the blue Send arrow to place the recording into the message thread.
  6. Press and hold the sent Memoji clip in the message bubble, then tap Save to store it in your Photos app.
  7. Open the Photos app, select the saved Memoji video, and tap the Share button (the square with an upward arrow).
  8. Wait for nearby devices to appear in the AirDrop section, then tap the recipient's name to send the file.
