How to Remotely Wipe an iPhone on iOS 12

Losing an iPhone poses a significant risk to your personal data, but iOS 12 includes built-in security tools to protect your information from afar. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to remotely erase all data from a lost or stolen iPhone using the Find My iPhone service, whether you are accessing it through a web browser on iCloud.com or using the Find My iPhone app on another iOS device.

Requirements for Remote Erase

Before proceeding, ensure the following conditions were met prior to the device being lost:

  • "Find My iPhone" was enabled on the lost device via your iCloud settings.
  • You know the Apple ID and password linked to the lost iPhone.
  • The device must have an internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular) to execute the erase immediately. If it is offline, the erase will automatically execute the next time it connects to the internet.

Method 1: Erase Remotely via iCloud.com

  1. Open any web browser on a computer, tablet, or phone and navigate to iCloud.com.
  2. Sign in using the Apple ID and password associated with the lost iPhone.
  3. If prompted for two-factor authentication, click the Find iPhone shortcut link at the bottom of the screen instead of entering a verification code (which you may not be able to receive without your phone).
  4. Click on All Devices at the top center of the screen.
  5. Select the lost iPhone from the drop-down list.
  6. In the device information window that appears, click Erase iPhone (represented by a trash can icon).
  7. Confirm your choice by clicking Erase.
  8. Enter your Apple ID password to confirm the command. You can also optionally enter a phone number and a message to be displayed on the screen after the device is wiped.

Method 2: Erase Using the Find My iPhone App on Another iOS Device

  1. Open the Find iPhone app on another iOS device (such as an iPad or a friend's iPhone).
  2. Sign in with the Apple ID and password associated with your lost device.
  3. Locate and tap on your lost iPhone from the list of devices displayed at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Tap Actions at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Tap the Erase iPhone option on the far right.
  6. Confirm the action by tapping Erase iPhone... again.
  7. Enter your Apple ID password to confirm the erase request.

What Happens After Erasing Your Device?

  • Data Removal: All personal data, settings, credit/debit cards for Apple Pay, and media will be permanently deleted from the device.
  • Activation Lock: Activation Lock remains active on iOS 12 as long as you do not remove the device from your account. This prevents anyone else from activating or using the phone without your Apple ID and password.
  • Tracking: Once the erase command is complete, you will no longer be able to track the location of the iPhone using Find My iPhone.
