How to Import Photos from Camera to iOS 12

Importing photos directly from a digital camera to an iPhone or iPad running iOS 12 is a straightforward process that requires a compatible Apple camera adapter. By connecting your camera or SD card to your iOS device, the native Photos app automatically launches an import interface, allowing you to quickly transfer full-resolution images and videos without needing a computer.

Required Hardware

To connect your camera to an iOS 12 device, you need one of the following official Apple adapters:

  • Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader: Best for inserting your camera's SD card directly.
  • Lightning to USB Camera Adapter (or Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter): Best for connecting your camera directly via its USB data cable.

Step-by-Step Import Process

  1. Connect the Adapter: Plug the Lightning connector of your adapter into the Lightning port on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Attach the Camera or Media:
    • If using the USB adapter, connect your digital camera to the adapter using a USB cable, then turn the camera on and ensure it is set to mass storage or transfer mode.
    • If using the SD card reader, insert the SD card into the reader slot.
  3. Open the Photos App: Your iOS 12 device should automatically open the Photos app directly to the Import tab. If it does not open automatically, tap the Photos app icon and select the Import tab located at the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  4. Select Your Photos:
    • To transfer everything, tap Import All in the top-right corner.
    • To transfer specific images, tap the individual photos or videos you want to import, then tap Import and choose Import Selected.
  5. Manage Original Files: Once the transfer is complete, a pop-up window will ask whether you want to Keep or Delete the imported media from the camera or SD card. Choose your preferred option.
  6. Disconnect: Safely unplug the adapter and camera/SD card from your iOS device.

The imported photos and videos will now be available in your primary library and organized inside an album titled Last Import in the Photos app.
