How to Group Notifications by App in iOS 12
iOS 12 introduced notification grouping to help declutter the Lock screen and Notification Center by stacking alerts together. While the system manages this automatically by default, users can customize these preferences on a per-app basis to suit their workflow. This guide explains how to access notification settings and configure grouping options for individual applications in iOS 12.
Steps to Change Notification Grouping Settings
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Notifications.
- Scroll through the list of installed applications and select the app you want to customize.
- Scroll to the bottom of the app's notification settings page and tap Notification Grouping.
- Select your preferred grouping method.
Understanding the Grouping Options
iOS 12 provides three distinct options for managing how notifications are stacked:
- Automatic: This is the default iOS behavior. The operating system intelligently groups notifications from the app based on context, such as conversation threads, topics, or mail accounts. An app may have multiple separate stacks under this setting.
- By App: This option forces all incoming alerts from the application into a single, unified stack, regardless of context, sender, or conversation thread.
- Off: This completely disables grouping for the selected application. Incoming alerts appear chronologically as individual banners, mirroring the behavior of older iOS versions.
Repeat these steps for any other applications where you want to adjust the notification behavior.
