How to Export Unmodified Original Photos in iOS 12

Exporting unmodified original photos in iOS 12 ensures you retain raw camera data, full-resolution files, and unrendered edits without unwanted compression. While iOS 12 lacks the one-tap "Unmodified Original" share sheet toggle introduced in later versions, users can still extract true originals through system setting adjustments for USB transfer, desktop iCloud access, AirDrop, and select cloud storage services.

Adjust Settings for Direct USB Transfer

The most reliable way to export original photo files from an iOS 12 device to a computer is via a Lightning-to-USB cable. By default, iOS 12 may automatically convert HEIC files to JPEG or render edits during transfer.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS 12 device.
  2. Scroll down and tap Photos.
  3. Scroll to the bottom section labeled Transfer to Mac or PC.
  4. Select Keep Originals instead of Automatic.

Connect the device to your computer via USB. On a Mac, open Image Capture or the Photos app to import the exact original assets (including separate HEIC and MOV components for Live Photos). On Windows, navigate to the device under This PC or File Explorer to copy the uncompressed media files directly.

Download Originals via iCloud.com

If iCloud Photos is enabled on your iOS 12 device, the original, full-resolution files are uploaded to Apple's servers. You can retrieve these files through a web browser:

  1. Navigate to iCloud.com on a desktop computer.
  2. Sign in with the Apple ID linked to your iOS 12 device.
  3. Open the Photos application.
  4. Select the photos you wish to export.
  5. Click and hold the Download icon (cloud with a downward arrow) in the top toolbar, then select Unmodified Original.

This exports the base file format as captured by the camera, stripping away any non-destructive filters or crops made on the device.

Transfer via AirDrop

AirDrop transfers files locally between Apple devices using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth without applying lossy compression. When sending images from iOS 12 to another Mac, iPhone, or iPad:

  1. Ensure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on both devices.
  2. Open the Photos app in iOS 12 and select your desired images.
  3. Tap the Share button and select the target device from the AirDrop row.

When transferred to a Mac, the file arrives in its native format (such as HEIC, DNG, or raw JPEG). Note that if the photo was edited on the iOS device, AirDrop in iOS 12 may send the modified version alongside an AAE sidecar file rather than a pristine untouched file.

Use Third-Party Cloud Backup Services

Cloud storage providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive offer standalone iOS apps that can read and upload native camera assets.

  1. Install your preferred cloud service app on the device.
  2. Navigate to the app’s internal settings and verify that image upload quality is set to Original or Full Resolution, disabling automatic conversion to JPEG.
  3. Manually upload the selected photos to preserve their native container and metadata.
