How to Enable Apple ID Two-Factor Authentication on iOS 12

Two-factor authentication adds an essential layer of security to your Apple ID, ensuring that only you can access your account even if someone knows your password. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to turn on this security feature directly from an iPhone or iPad running iOS 12 using your trusted phone number.

Steps to Turn On Two-Factor Authentication

  1. Open Settings: Launch the Settings app on your iOS 12 device.
  2. Access Your Apple ID: Tap your Apple ID banner (your name and profile picture) located at the very top of the screen.
  3. Go to Password & Security: Tap on Password & Security.
  4. Initiate Setup: Tap Turn On Two-Factor Authentication, then tap Continue.
  5. Add a Trusted Phone Number: Enter the phone number where you want to receive verification codes via text message or automated phone call.
  6. Choose Verification Method: Select whether you prefer to verify via Text Message or Phone Call, then tap Next in the upper-right corner.
  7. Enter the Code: Check your phone for the six-digit verification code sent by Apple, then enter it on your device to confirm your number and activate the feature.

Once verified, two-factor authentication will be active on your Apple ID. Any future sign-ins on new devices or browsers will require both your password and a six-digit verification code sent to your trusted devices or phone number.
