How to Edit an Existing Memoji in iOS 12

Yes, you can easily edit or update an existing Memoji avatar after creating it in iOS 12. Apple allows users to modify any previously created Memoji to change facial features, hairstyles, skin tones, accessories, and headwear at any time. The editing process is managed directly within the Messages app, where you can update your current look, duplicate an avatar to test variations, or delete it entirely.

Steps to Edit an Existing Memoji

To update an existing Memoji on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 12, follow these steps:

  1. Open Messages: Launch the Messages app and open an existing conversation or start a new draft.
  2. Access the Memoji App: Tap the App Store icon next to the text input field, then tap the Animoji icon (represented by a monkey face).
  3. Select Your Memoji: Swipe sideways through the avatar list to find the custom Memoji you wish to modify.
  4. Open the Options Menu: Tap the three dots (...) located in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  5. Choose Edit: Select Edit from the pop-up menu.
  6. Make Your Changes: Browse through the feature categories (Skin, Hair Style, Head Shape, Eyes, Brows, Nose & Lips, Ears, Facial Hair, Eyewear, and Headwear) and adjust the attributes as desired.
  7. Save the Changes: Tap Done in the top-right corner to save your updates.

Additional Options

In the same three-dot menu, iOS 12 also provides two additional management options:

  • Duplicate: Creates an exact copy of the chosen Memoji, allowing you to modify specific features—such as adding glasses or changing hair color—without overwriting your original avatar.
  • Remove: Permanently deletes the selected Memoji from your device.
